Levi’s Music Prize extended to New Zealand artists

Kiwi artists will now be eligible for Australia’s Levi’s Music Prize, which provides financial support for acts looking to take their career to the next level.

The BIGSOUND initiative is worth $100,000, which is divided into four $25K quarterly grants. Applications are now open for Round 2 for 2018/19 and is open to Australian and New Zealand artists who have performed on the official BIGSOUND line up over the past five years.

Going Global: Nevin Domer

Nevin Domer has worked in the Chinese music industry since 2005 and believes it remains a hugely untapped market for New Zealand bands.

As well helping found the indie labels Maybe Mars and Genjing Records, he has also booked and managed tours in China for a number of New Zealand bands, including Die! Die! Die!, Wax Chattels, Shocking Pinks, Orchestra of Spheres, God Bows To Math, and Carb on Carb.

“There was a good reception for all these acts,” says Domer,  who is one of the international speakers at this year’s Going Global Music Summit.

One of the most rewarding things Flying Nun’s Ben Howe has found on his travels is when people enthuse about the label’s newer acts like Fazerdaze as well as the legendary bands of the past.

“It’s a nice feeling – people talking about our past and our present,” he says.

Of course, with a label as iconic as Flying Nun, the two are inseparable. But both he and general manager Matthew Davis reckon the record company has found the perfect balance.

Flying Nun icons Bailterspace and Headless Chickens will join rising stars such as The Beths, Wax Chattels and Estère at The Others Way 2018  in Auckland next month.

Held this year on August 31, the 2018 edition of the annual indie extravaganza boasts an eclectic, generation-spanning line-up of local artists, who will perform across than 10 venues on and around Karangahape Road.
