“It was a pretty amazing experience,” says Sophie Mashlan of recording her debut single with award-winning producer Ben Edwards. “I was so absorbed in the music for those weeks and Ben is just incredible.”
‘Let You Down’ is the debut single from the 19-year-old singer-songwriter and is the first track to be shared from her upcoming, as yet untitled, album.
The record was recorded at The Sitting Room by Edwards, the acclaimed the producer behind artists such as Tami Neilson, Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding and Nadia Reid.
“All the songs are solely written by me, and I’ve always had such strong notions of what I imagine for instrumentation,” Mashlan says. “But Ben was able to provide a bit of influence – something I don’t get often as a solo writer. We were able to create a record that I feel super proud of and am excited to share.”
She describes ‘Let You Down’ as “an abstract representation of my feelings on a failed relationship”. She continues: “I feel like it represents the way I write about things – metaphorically and without focusing on musical conventions, rather basing the sound on instinct and passion.”
She will follow up the release of ‘Let You Down’ with some live dates with Californian musician Donavon Frankenreiter, who kicks off his NZ tour in Wellington at San Fran next Tuesday (November 27).
